(Answer) Title: Quality Improvement Plan on Regulating the Difference in Ratio of Selling Price to Production Cost of Pharmaceuticals
Purpose Statement: Pharmaceutical companies spend the most amount of money on research and development (R&D). This means that even if the initial price of a drug is high in the market, the cost over time should be able to gradually decrease. Since the cost of R&D will have been recovered, the price of the drug should not bear an extremely significant difference compared to the production cost.
However, the situation in the US is not entirely so. The price of drugs and generic brands have a constant, precipitous gap compared to the production cost. It is the FDA that regulates a quality check on the drug companies in the US and international companies who export pharmaceuticals to the US. However, price regulations are equally a pressing matter that needs to be in check.
Martin Shkreli is a name common to this controversy. In charge of ‘Turing’ pharmaceuticals, Shkreli increased the price of an HIV drug called ‘Darapim’ that contains ‘Pyrimethamine’. He increased the price to about $750 a pill. When a group of Australian STEM students attempted to replicate the drug, they successfully made it at $2 a pill. Such an incident brings to light a kind of malpractice that deserves to be thoroughly looked into.
