2. Two of the Portfolios of Research that are of key importance to this week's learning are
(1) Health Information Technology and (2) Patient Safety.
Describe how these two Portfolios of Research relate to the ONC's Health Information Technology Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan: June 2013 (Washington, DC: Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, 2013).

The ONC's Health Information Technology Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan describes a plan to increase the implementation of health information technology and reduce complications associated with its use. Its goals involve making it easier for clinicians to report health IT–related incidents and hazards, encouraging reporting to Patient Safety Organizations, give assistance to the use of standardized forms in hospital incident reporting systems, and training surveyors to identify safe and unsafe practices associated with health IT. The Joint Commission has also contracted with ONC to better detect the relevant health IT–related safety issues across health care settings.
The qualities of health information technology include its ability to store and retrieve data; the ability to communicate patient information in a legible format; medication safety through increased legibility, which gradually decreases the risk of medication errors. There by it increases the patient safety.
The clinicians faces some challenges with the new modalities of technology. But the use of technology increases the quality of health services. By correcting the technology challenges the safehand use of technology improves and thereby patient safety also. This is explained in the ONC's Health Information Technology Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan.
