Consider an ideal gas at a given state expanded in two different ways to a fixed final volume. In the first case, the gas is expanded at constant pressure, and in the second case at constant temperature. Sketch each process on a P-v diagram. For which case is the work done greater?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Area under P-v diagram represents work done for a closed system

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FYI

Process 1:- Constant temperature expansion process

Process 2:- Constant pressure or Isobaric expansion process

Process 3:- Adiabatic expansion process

By observing P-v diagram we can conclude that

Area under process 2 > Area under process 1 >Area under process 3

Hence, Work by process 2 > Work by process 1> Work by process 3.

Work under constant pressure expansion process is maximum.

A fixed amount of ideal gas goes through a process abc. In state a, the temperature of the gas is 205°C, its pressure is 1.25 atm, and it occupies a volume of 0.080 m3. Consider a container with a frictionless piston that contains a given amount of an ideal gas. Let’s assume that initially the external pressure is 2.20 bar, which is the sum of a 1 bar atmospheric pressure and the pressure created by a very large number of very small pebbles that rest on top of the piston. The initial volume of gas is   0.300 L   and the initial temperature is 25°C. Now, you will increase the volume of the gas by...
