1. It is generally accepted that democratic systems perform relatively well and give voters a voice in governance. Does this general viewpoint place to much faith in democracy? Why or why not? Should we search for other modes of governance (perhaps some form of oligarchy such as bureaucracy, meritocracy or technocracy) to supersede democracy?
“Man's capacity for justice makes democracy possible, but man's inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary.”
~ Reinhold Niebuhr
1.Amartya Sen calls Democracy as a universal value. It means democracy is not just a means but an end in itself.
2.Abraham Lincolns famous definition describes democracy as government by the people, the government of the people and government for the people.
3.Yes, the democratic system indeed gives voters a voice in
governance but democracy is more than that. Democracy is about to
empowerment of people. And people feel empowered when they are
adequately represented.
4. People feel dignified, people feel Justice when they have to
says in laws and regulations of the state.
5. When we will try to supersede democracy with the introduction of an oligarchic element, people tend to feel injustice which ultimately may lead to disorder.
6. Also some form of oligarchic elements are not bad given that there are checks and balances and they are answerable to peoples.
Hence, too much faith in democracy is not bad our focus should be on making democracy more representative by introducing proportional representation, after all, proportional representation is the real representation.
