The United States is still a complex country and politics represents the contrasting needs of people. Based on their family history, the kinds of occupations they have, their race or age, whether they have kids, and so on, people can have different voting interests. We must consider how multiple interests come into play in order to understand the democratic process.

In U.S. politics, private people are not the sole players. While individual voters are the only ones who can cast votes, with money and other resources, special interest groups and lobbyists can influence elections and law-making. This influence has at times been so evident that others have debated whether the U.S. is actually a people's democracy or anything much of an oligarchy of special interest interests. By shaping public opinion and functioning as an intelligence philtre, the media often plays an important part in politics.

Parties are active in election efforts and educational outreach or opposition acts. Parties also promote an expressed ideology or vision backed by a written platform and clear agendas, creating an alliance of disparate groups. The type of election structure is a significant factor in deciding the type of political party system.

Three or four parties are frequently elected to parliament in large numbers in countries with a proportional representation election system, and thus can have more access to public office. In two-party systems , two political parties govern to such a degree that parliamentary success is virtually unlikely under the umbrella of any other party.
