There are numerous ways used by firms depending on their size to forecast the supply of inside candidates. Smaller firms use manual devices to track employee qualifications, their education, internal training, special skills, and potential for promotion and create an inventory that contains data on employee's performance records, educational background, and promotability. These personnel inventory and development records have the qualification information on each employee of the firm. Another option used by them is a personnel replacement chart for the firm's top positions. The use of this method helps the firm look into details such as present performance and promotability for each position's potential replacement.

Larger firms that have a higher number of employees might not be able to track details like qualifications and skills manually. They use options like computerizing this information using various packaged software systems like the Applicant tracking system or Human resource management system. They also link skills inventories with their human resources system so that an employee's skills inventory is automatically updated each time he is trained or appraised.
