How many tons of refrigeration is required to cool 50 GPM of liquid from 110 F to 50 F ?
The liquid has a specific heat of 1.40 BTU/lb F and density of 9.2 lb/gal.
Note:
1 Ton refrigeration = 12,000 BTU/hr
Solution
The cooling capacity of the refrigeration expressed in Ton of Refrigeration is to be found out.
Given
Volume flow rate of liquid,
Initial temperature of liquid = 110 o F
Final temperature of liquid = 50 o F
Density of liquid,
Specific heat of liquid,
Analysis
The cooling capacity of a refrigeration system ie., the rate of heat removed is given by the equation
where, is the mass flow rate of liquid
C is the Specific heat of the liquid
is the temperature change of the liquid
Writing eqn (i) in terms of Volume, we get
since Mass = Density * Volume
Now,
Multipying the above value by 60, we get
To convert the above value in terms of Ton of refrigeration, divide the above value by 12000
