  • this act as a bicarbonate buffer

  • acid base disturbance in the body is measured by calculating ratio of HCO3 : H2CO3
  • H2CO3 is a weak acid and its conjugate base is HCO3-
  • they react with strong acid and base as follows:
  • HCl + NaHCO3 H2CO3 +NaCl
  • NaOH + H2CO3 NaHCO3 + H2O
  • the pKa of bicarbonate buffer system is 6.1 so it act as optimum buffer at blood pH 7.4
  • also it is a most important buffer system as its constituents can independently i.e, CO2 by lungs and bicarbonate by kidney
