1. How frequently are people discriminated against on the basis of their looks? Is it a serious problem in job situations? What about the fact that teachers give higher marks to the students who are good looking?
Yes, it's true that people are frequently discriminated against on the basis of their looks. Attractive individuals get more benefits than their less-attractive counterparts in all fields. They get help easily from others, less punishment for crimes, more salary on jobs, and high importance than others. People want to talk with people who are more attractive than others, attractive people have more friends than less attractive ones and so many other advantages these people enjoy being more attractive.
In the workplace, some managers give importance to people who are more attractive, also co-workers can treat differently if someone do not match with their professional appearances. Such type of discrimination happens mainly to women and young workers.
Yes, it is a serious problem in job situations. In the workplace, most of the business owners give importance to appearance while hiring candidates. They think that business can grow automatically if they have both talented and good looking employees. As per business owner's opinion, sales target can be achieved if they have good looking marketing people. Even products can be promoted easily with the help of an attractive sales executive. They just use employee's apperance as the yardstick for achieving goal of the company.
Due to this type of discrimination the less attractive people are
the sufferers, they are not getting enough benefits that they
deserve. In certain cases, less educated people get high positions
or a high salary in their jobs only because of their good looking
apperance. They take away the chances of better opportunity, while
their less attractive counterparts loose a lot. This is completely
unethical, there should be legal proceedings against the
discriminators.
It happens, in some educational institutions teachers give higher marks to the students who are good looking. The students who have a good facial appearance reported higher levels of teacher attention, more friends and get more success. Sometimes attention and praise from their surroundings encourage children to concentrate more on their study and this helps them to fetch good marks. Teachers, in schools ask questions to those who are more attractive and extrovert type. Some teachers want to see attractive students with high marks, so they give priority to these students in class.
This type discrimination among students is a very shamful act and
teachers should stay away from this. Students are mentally and
emotionally affected by this type of discrimination. It affects
their study as well as their entire career. So there should be law
to protect children from these type of unethical behavior of
teachers.
