Earth, whose load factor 0.80 is and whose shrinkage factor is 0.90 is being placed as fill. The construction schedule requires that fill material needs to be placed at a minimum rate of 600 LCY/hr. (Hint: you need to turn the LCY requirement into a CCY requirement. This is required as the production for a compactor is based on CCY.) The thickness of the compacted layers is 5.5”. A compactor with a roller drum width of 7’ is used to compact the material at a speed of 3 mph. Assume you are operating 45 minutes per hour. Determine the number of roller required to provide the necessary compaction rate if eight drum passes are specified for each layer of earth.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The problem is solved by converting lcy to ccy by multiplying lcy with (1-Sh)and load factor as explained below. Then the production rate of one roller is estimated. Finally the required rate is divided by production rate of one roller to determine the number of trucks.

A satellite is placed in an elongated elliptical (not circular) orbit around the Earth. At the point in its orbit where it is closest to the Earth, it is a distance of 1.00 × 10^6 m from the surface (not the center) of the Earth, and is moving at a velocity of 5.14 km/s.
