what is the voltage output specification of the charging system when a load is placed on the system?
The charging system output test measures system voltage and current under maximum load.A regulator voltage test checks the calibration ofthe voltage regulator and detects a low or high setting. Most voltage regulators are designed to operatebetween 13.5 to 14.5 volt range. This range is stated fornormal temperatures with the battery fully’ charged.Regulator voltage test procedure is as follows:Set the load tester selector to the correct positionusing the manufacturer’s manual. With the loadcontrol OFF, run the engine at 2,000 rpm orspecified test speed. Note the voltmeter readingand compare it to the manufacturer’sspecifications. If the voltmeter reading is steady and withinmanufacturer’s specifications, then the regulatorsetting is okay. However, if the volt reading is steadybut too high or too low, then the regulator needsadjustment or replacement. If the reading were notsteady, this would indicate a bad wiring connection, analternator problem, or a defective regulator, andfurther testing is required.
