As pressure increases the freezing temperature of water increases or decreases?

How has the fact that water expands when it freezes shaped our world?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1.

Density of ice at 320F and 1 atm is 0.917 g/cm3

2.

Density of liquid water at 320F and 1 atm is 1 g/cm3

3.

As pressure increases, the energy required to boil a liquid increases because boiling point is the point where the vapour pressure equals or exceeds the atmospheric pressure. so boiling point of water increses when pressure increases.

4.

Tripple point is a point from where freezing point increases from 0oCat 1 atm pressure upto 0.01oC at 0.006 atm pressure. At pressure below this point water will never be a liquid so when pressure increases the freezing temperature of water also increases.

5. When water is cooled it gets contracted till the 4oCAfter that, it expands slightly until it reaches the freezing point. Since water is made up of hydrogen bonds and hydrogen bonds gets stronger with lowering the temperature and it takes the shape of hydrogen bonded lattice structure which expands the structure.
