The density of ice is 920 kg/m3. If an ice cube is put in a beaker of water collected from the Great Salt Lake it floats with 80% of its volume submerged. What is the density of the water collected from the Great Salt Lake?

  1. 736 kg/m3
  2. 1000 kg/m3
  3. 1080 kg/m3
  4. 1150 kg/m3
  5. none of the above

Solutions

Expert Solution

let volume of ice cube be x

volume submerged = 80 %0f x =

here we have Buoyancy force = weight of ice = mg (using archimedes principle )

so buoyancy force = weight of water displace = (density of water ) (volume submerged ) g

weight of ice = (density of ice ) (volume of ice  ) g

equating both we have

(density of water ) (volume submerged ) g =(density of ice ) (volume of ice  ) g

putting the values we have

(density of water ) () g =920 ( x ) g

  density of water = = 1150 kg/m3

so option D is correct

The density of a 10 kg cube of silver is 10.5 g/cm3. What would the density of a 5 kg cube of silver be? I thought the answer would be 5.25 g/cm^3 because m1/m2=p1/p2 so 10kg/5kg=10.5 g/cm^3/ x and you solve for x. But this is coming up as wrong and I don't know why, do i need to convert the kg to g???

An 80 kg skydiver falls through air with a density of 1.15 kg/m3 . Assume that his drag coefficient is C=0.57. When he falls in the spread-eagle position his body presents an area A1=0.94 m2 to the wind, whereas when he dives head first, with arms close to the body and legs together his area is reduced to A2=0.21 m2 . What are the terminal speeds in both cases?
