The density of ice is 920 kg/m3. If an ice cube is put in a beaker of water collected from the Great Salt Lake it floats with 80% of its volume submerged. What is the density of the water collected from the Great Salt Lake?
let volume of ice cube be x
volume submerged = 80 %0f x =
here we have Buoyancy force = weight of ice = mg (using archimedes principle )
so buoyancy force = weight of water displace = (density of water ) (volume submerged ) g
weight of ice = (density of ice ) (volume of ice ) g
equating both we have
(density of water ) (volume submerged ) g =(density of ice ) (volume of ice ) g
putting the values we have
(density of water ) () g =920 ( x ) g
density of water = = 1150 kg/m3
so option D is correct
