Astronomy

Summarize the modern scientific model of cosmology and the age of the universe. Provide at least three different pieces of observational evidence to support the details in your description.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Big Bang theory is the best modern scientific model to describe how the universe expanded from a very high-density and high-temperature state. If the known laws of physics are extrapolated to the highest density regime, the result is a singularity which is typically associated with the Big Bang.

Observational evidence

Big Bang theory offers a nice explanation for a broad range of phenomena, including the abundance of light elements, the cosmic microwave background (CMB), large scale structure and Hubble's law of expanding univese.

I will be glad to see your comment if you have any query and thumb up if you are satisfied. Thanks...

How does the field of cosmology fit into the larger picture of astronomy? Explain the specific evidence for the Big Bang. Was there ever opposition to this idea in the astronomical community? If so, who was opposed to it and why? Dark matter and dark energy have been proposed to explain two very different phenomena astronomers notice about the universe. What are the two phenomena and how do dark matter and dark energy help explain them? Cosmologists have two words...

In modern cosmology, it is commonly stated to the public that as we look deeper and deeper into space, we are seeing further into the past. CMB is the relic of the big bang after photon decoupling following recombination. However, if we pushed further back in our conceptualization, eventually we get to the period of inflation, and then to a period before that where energy density of the universe was some large value (possibly infinite). So why would it be...

10. The Hubble Age. Let's estimate the age of the universe. Pick two galaxies, one 10 Mpc away, and one 100 Mpc away. Calculate how fast each one is moving away from us, assuming a Hubble constant of 70 km/sec/Mpc. Assume they have always been moving at that speed and calculate how long (in years) it has taken them to reach their present distance. Because the expansion is uniform, it shouldn’t matter which galaxies you use. What is your estimate...
