Why is that most astronomers believe we are living in the “Age of Exploration” for astronomy ? What are some of the explorations that have taken place in the past 50 years

Solutions

Expert Solution

It is believed by Astronomers that we are living in the age of exploration since there are lot of things which are unknown to us in our cosmos and now we have well developed technology to explore it.

Some of the explorations that have taken place in the past 50 years are follows-

1. Gravitational wave in 2017

Gravitational wave signal GW170817 was detected by LIGO/Virgocollaboration. It was produced by a neutron star collision that occurred in the galaxy NGC 4993 . This was one of the best test of General relativity.

2. Exoplanet Proxima Centauri b in 2016

Now it becomes closest known exoplanet to our solar system.

3. First visual proof of black holes in 2012.

Suvi Gezari's team in Johns Hopkins University published this. They record images of a supermassive black hole 2.7 million light-years away that is swallowing a red giant.

4. In 1992, the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite produces a detailed map of the background radiation remaining from the Big Bang.

5. Neil Armstrong on the surface of moon in 1969.

The H-R diagram is the most important graph in astronomy. One of the reasons that this graph is so powerful is the number of different kinds of data it shows. Most graphs show two types of data. The H-R diagram shows at least 5. Can you name these 5 types of information about stars that appear on the H-R diagram?
