describe a situation when you were able to be a visionary, good
communicator, etc.?
I am a big fan of: show, don't tell: instead of saying that you,
for example, have a great product, showcase those great
features.
A situation in which I was able to be a good communicator was when my employer was planning to launch a new product in the market and I was given the responsibility for the marketing of this product. I work for a large automobile company in their marketing department and the company is about to launch a new SUV with excellent off roading capabilities. I had to give a presentation to the senior management with regards to the marketing strategy for this SUV. During the presentation I surprised myself by being a good communicator and hence by being able to drive home the point in the most systematic manner. My presentation outlined that our advertisements will not talk about the car’s features at all. Instead it will show various real life drives of the car in difficult terrains. This will help to define the underlying features of the car in an optimal manner. I reasoned that our car is meant for a niche category of buyers who go for serious off-roading and hence our advertisements will immediately resonate with them and they will be able to figure the capabilities of our SUV and the strengths of our SUV. There is no need to use glorified and flowery words in the advertisements as the video will be enough to showcase its primary features. The senior management agreed and we went forward with this marketing strategy. The SUV was very well received in the market and my company was able to garner a sizeable chunk of market share in a short span of time.
