In this project we have done the Evaluation of Magnesite samples collected from the Lakuri dada hill, Lakuri, Nepal using Phase analysis by XRD, Thermal analysis by TG and DTA, and wet chemical analysis. From the evaluation we can see that in the lower region Magnesite purity is very high. The main associated mineral in the lower region is Antigorite. As we go up the associated mineral is calcite and dolomite apart from Antigorite. Thermal analysis does not show Goethite or any other mineral hydrate containing iron. It seems that iron hydrate or iron silicate hydrate is very low as indicated by X ray diffractogram. Magnetic separation of iron is not possible as it occurs in Hydrate form. Chemical analysis shows iron oxide content is high which cannot be separated in raw form. However, iron oxide can be separated after calcination at 1000oC. SiO2 cannot be separated as it comes as Magnesium silicate hydrate. Chemical analysis data shows this Magnesite is of medium purity.
Based on these we can conclude that this magnesite reserve can be used for production of magnesite refractories. As SiO2 content is on a little higher side, use of these magnesites can be avoided for the production of refractories for steelmaking of low carbon steel and ultra-low carbon steels. However, it can be used in other steelmaking processes. The upper region less pure ore can be utilized in the production of stabilized and semi-stabilized MgO– dolomite refractories with and without addition of proper amounts of iron-rich material.
Hence I proved that this magnesite deposit can be used for making refractories.
