As discussed in the chapter, picky eating is quite common among young children. Why might this occur? What eating disorder(s) may picky eating be a predictor of in adulthood? What recommendations could be made to parents of a picky eater?
Mothers today have a challenge in making their children eat the nutritious meal they have prepared for the children.Picky eating starts as early as one year when the child starts to eat and is often distracted by other activities such as walking,playing.Children feel secure to stick to the same food rather than changes everytime.This can be addressed by the parents at an early age.Picky eating behaviours can show tendency of strong food preferences,lack of willingness to try new foods,eating slowly and in small quantity.Parents should be educated as to teach children to develop a health food habits as they grow older.By the age of 5 dietary habits are set,Parents can talk about pleasant things,plan happy meals together,avoid television distractions,be a role model in eating habits.Feeding disorder in children can lead to Anorexia -intense fear to maintain body wieght and Bulimia-frequent binge eating as they grow.Chilldren are often affected by societal norms.This can lead to psychological disorders such as anxiety,depression and chronic health problems .
