Propose three potential fates of the acetyl CoA generated from catabolism of branched chain amino acids.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The potential fates of Acetyl co-A are:

1. They enter into the Krebs cycle which takes place in the matrix of mitochondria. Various enzymes are involved in the Krebs cycle. Krebs cycle is an aerobic process. Acetyl Co-A is accepted by Oxalo acetate(a four carbon compound). They result in the first product of Krebs cycle, Citric acid , which is a 6C compound. This process ultimately oxidizes Acetyl co-A into carbon dioxide and water.

2. In Mitochondria, ketone bodies are synthesized from Acetyl co-A. These ketone bodies are used for energy production in liver and other tissues. Excess ketones are produced when there is lack of glucose ,for example during starvation.

3. Acetyl co-A can be used for formation of cholesterol or other fatty acids in the cytoplasm. It usually occurs when the cell has enough energy to perform other functions.
