‘Only after the last tree has been cut down, Only after the last river has been poisoned, Only after the last fish has been caught, Only then will you find out money cannot be eaten’. What is Deegan demonstrating by utilising this ‘Cree Indian saying’? Explain.
Deegan is demonstrating that if we destroy all our precious resources then we will left with nothing find and then we will realise that money is not everything.
Here focus is trying to highlight the importance of resources and how people are exploiting their resources at such alarming rate and if this will continue then we would left with nothing except regret. People are depleting their resources, polluting them and even threatening some rare species just for the sake of money.
Instead focusing on sustainable development and optimum utilisation of resources, people are selfishly crossing all the limits in exploiting the nature and trying to hoard more and more money with themselves. They don't even realising that if all resources would get destroyed then what will they do with their money.
At the end Deegan is trying to give us a wake up call that if we continue like this then day is not far when survival of human becomes difficult.
