Yes, it is true that geysers have some source inside the earth surface or beneath it from where heat is coming and the water comes in contact with this heat source and gets boiled up. After boiling of water, there is release of steam which creates pressure and since there generate high pressure inside the earth and pressure is low outside it. The water will blow from high pressure to low pressure with great speed creating geysers. But if this supply of heat is cut down, there is no source now to generate heat and hence geysers will stop erupting now.
This supply can be cut if the energy beneath earth is not sufficient to come out, if the source of heat has shifted to other region with moving plates (this case is similar to Hawaii islands which had an active source of lava earlier but this source moved further and the volcano became extinct). similarly when the source is moved away, the supply of heat is cut and geyser do not get enough hot boiling water.
