Restriction enzyme is an enzyme which is used to cut DNA at a specific location. It is also called as molecular scissors. It is a great importance in Recombinant DNA technology because it helps in the isolation of specific genes from the genomic DNA of an organism. It cuts DNA at a specific location called as restriction site which is a set of 4 to 8 base pairs. The enzymes are very specific for the restriction site. Even a single base pairs change in the restriction site unable the enzyme to cut the DNA.
