One species of plant produces blue, light blue, and white flowers. To determine the inheritance pattern, the following matings were performed:

blue x blue to blue

white x white to white

blue x white to light blue

This example represents a pattern: (choose the best option)

a. Associated with the X chromosome

b.Incomplete Dominance

c. Codominance

d.Mendelian

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans. (c) Codominance

In the above question the species of plant produces Blue, Light blue and White flowers. Mating between the plants were done in order to identify the inheritance patternt

As shown: According to Mendel cross

White x white = white progeny

So both parents are homozygous as all progeny shows white color

Blue x blue = blue progeny

Here also both parents are homozygous as all the progeny shows blue color flower

thus,

Let blue be 'ww' and white be 'WW'

white x blue = light blue

here when both color plant are crossed it gives out the 3rd color which is light blue.

This sitiation lead to codominance of the character as if 2 allele are homozygous it shows the true breeding trait but when the alleles are different hence heterozygous, apart from showing the dominant trait it shows some other trait that must resemble either both parents or none.

Codominance is relation between 2 version of genes, wherein the alleles of a gene pair in a heterozygote are fully expressed and each version of gene makes a slightly different protein.

A cross was made between a plant that has blue flowers and purple seeds to a plant with white flowers and green seeds. This is a parental cross and the parents are homozygous for both characters (color of the flower and color of the seeds). The resulting offspring (the F1 generation) is allowed to self-fertilize. Complete a Punnett square representing the F2 generation that results from the above self-fertilization. The traits blue flowers (B) and purple seeds (P) are dominant...

A wild legume with white flowers and long pods is crossed to one with purple flowers and short pods. The F1 offspring are allowed to self-fertilize, and the F2 generation has 301 long purple, 99 short purple, 612 long pink, 195 short pink, 295 long white and 98 short white plants. How are these traits being inherited? Inheritance of these traits can best be explained by one gene with 3 different alleles.   Inheritance of these traits can best be explained...
