You are given 2 pure breeding stocks of a certain plant. One has white flowers, and the other has purple flowers.
1. when these two are bred together, all of the resulting plants have purple flowers. Explain this result in terms of dominance. Choose symbols (letters) to represent the alleles of the gene involved, and use them to show the genotype of each parent and of the hybrid offspring.
2. what result (ratio of phenotypes) do you expect to see if you allow the offspring produced in #1 to self -hybridize? Draw a punnett square to explain why these resuts are obtained.
(1)When the two pure breeding stocks are bred together, all of the resulting plants have purple flowers in F1 generation. Let white flowers are recessive (ww) and purple flowers are doninent (PP), if the F1 progeny (wP) is purple means the dominent one shows its character and supresses the recessive one.
(2) The ratio of phenotypes is 3:1 in F2 generation if allow the offspring produced in F1 to self -hybridize.
F1 generation wP(Tall) wP (Tall)
Gametes w or P w or P
Male gametes
Female gametes | w | P |
w | ww (White flowered) | wP (Purple flowered) |
P | wP (Purple flowered) | PP (Purple flowered) |
In the F2 generation one white flowered plants have both recessive alleles (ww) which are responsible white flower colour while in other three purple flowered plants have one dominent allele (P) (which is responsible for purple flower colour) with one recessive allele which are responsible white flower colour. The purple flowered plants of the F2 generation have purple flowers because of the dominent allele (P) which shows its character thats why these resuts are obtained. .
