1.The purpose of psychotropic medication is to treat depression, which is capable of affecting the mind, emotions, and behavior.
2. The putative main mechanisms of actions of psychotropic drugs for treatment of schizophrenia and different types of depression and anxiety are summarized. Degradation or blockade of reuptake from the synaptic cleft, but slow regulatory processes are necessary for the antidepressant effect.
3. Side effects of psychotropic medication are:
_ blurred vision
_ nausea
_ vomiting
_ trouble sleeping
_ anxiety
_ drowsiness
_ weight gain
_ sexual problems.
4. Psychotropic drugs have many interactions with other drugs, food, alcohol, and over-the-counter products. Always tell your doctor or pharmacist all the medications and supplements you are taking to avoid adverse reactions. Stimulant drugs like amphetamine interact with tricyclics, lithium, SSRIs, etc... Combining these drugs can cause a serious reaction called serotonin syndrome.
5. Some precautions for medications are:
_ medications should be in their original container with label affixed.
_ always carry a copy of the original Prescription and/or a letter from the prescribing physician.
_ carry medications in your carry-on baggage.
_ the documents should include both the brand name and the generic name.
