What will be the degree of dissociation of 0.1 M Mg(NO3)2 solution if van’t Hoff factor is 2.74?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Explanation :

When Mg(NO3)2 it dissociate into Mg 2+ ion and NO3 - ion. Based on the degree of dissociation formula we are able to calculate directly degree of dissociation.

given vant Hoff factor (i) = 2.74

Reaction:

               Mg(NO3)2 ⟶  Mg2+   +    2NO3−

Degree of Dissociation

               α = (i−1)/(n−1)                                                                  =(2.74−1)/(3−1)                                                            =1.742                                                                              = 0.87

% Degree of Dissociation  = 0.87(100) = 87%

Degree of disssociation is 87%.
