what is nervous system and its functions

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution: The nervous system can be considered as a sophisticated ordered arrangement of the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs and nerves that connects aforementioned organs to different body parts. Together they coordinate and regulates all aspects of bodily functions. The brain is the chief organizer here. The brain, stores, integrates, calculate and transmits information through nerve cells called as neurons. These neurons inturn are interconnected by trillions of synapses, the area where one neuron communicate with one another. Th neurons in the nervous system can be considered as most morphologically polarized cells that are organized to execute discrete funtions. Some regulates the muscular movements of the body and hormonal secretion. Some units sense changes in the exteral and internal environment of body and frequently communicte with brain for storage and processing of the gathered informations. Certain other gruop of nerons have functions in cognition, emotion etc. Another group of cells associate with neurons are glia cells. Eventhough they do not themselves conduct electrical signals, they have important function like protective by forming myelin sheaths, some other types of glia form asterocytes that provide growth factors and other signals to neuron.
