Compare the different components of lipids, triglycerides, fatty acids, cholesterol, and lipoproteins
ANSWER
Lipids have main four components which are further fivided into sub categories. The main four components includes Fatty acids,Glycerides,Non glyceride lipids and Complex lipids.
-Fatty acids are divided into Saturated and Unsaturated fatty acids .
-Glycerides are divided into Neutral Glycerides and Phosphoglycerides.
-Nonglyceride lipids includes sphingolipids, steroids and fats.
-Complex lipids include lipoproteins.
TRIGLYCERIDES
A triglyceride is composed of three fatty acids and glycerol. Each fatty acid consists of a hydrocarbon chain with a carboxyl group at one end. The glycerol molecule has three hydroxyl groups, each able to interact with the carboxyl group of a fatty acid. These triglycerides are more prominent compounds in food, fats, oils. If all the fatty acids in a triglycerides are identical then its known as simple triglycerides and if different then its complex triglycerides.
FATTY ACIDS
Fatty acid consist of long chain of even number of carbon atoms and which is a straight chain and also contains hydrogen atoms along the chain at one end and carboxyl group at another end .This carboxyl group make it an acid form.Fatty acids can be saturated and unsaturated.
CHOLESTROL
It contains LDL(bad cholesterol) ,HDL(good cholesterol),Total cholesterol and Triglycerides (which is the cholesterol which we get from food we eat).
-Total blood cholesterol is a measure of LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and other lipid components.
LIPOPROTEINS
As the name indicated it contains lipids and protein called Apoproteins and the lipids includes cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids.
Based on density it can be classified into
-High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL)
-Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL)
-Intermediate Density Lipoproteins (IDL)
-Very Low-Density Lipoproteins (VLDL)
-Chylomicrons.
