1. Describe dietary sources of cholesterol

2. Explain( compare and contrast) the different types of lipoproteins tested in a lipid panel

Solutions

Expert Solution

1)cholestrol is a waxy substance found in our body and animal product such as meat, egg, diary. It is an essential component of every cell in our body, giving cell membrane strength and flexibility .It plays an important role in the production of hormones &Vitamin D.

Dietary sources :-Egg, cheese, shellfish, organ meats, full fat yogurt, Fried food, dessert, processed meat, fast food.

2)Lipoproteins are synthesized in liver contains different amounts of triglycerides, cholesterol. Phospholipids, and protein.

a) High density lipoprotein(HDL)-collect the cholesterol from the tissues and transport it back to the liver .(Good cholesterol) It protect our heart from diseases and it is a part of innate immune system.

b) Low density lipoprotein (LDL) -cholesterol from the liver to the tissues (Bad cholesterol)

c) Very low density lipoprotein(VLDL)-carry triacylglycerol from liver to adipose tissue.

It function as the body's internal support mechanism for lipids.

d) Chylomicrone -these are lipoprotein particles consist of

1)triglycerides(85-92%)

2)phospholipids(6-12%)

3)cholestrol(1-3%)

4)proteins(1-2%).

It will transport the lipids absorbed from the small intestine to adipose, cardiac, and skeletal muscle tissues.

e) Intermediate density protein(IDL):-

It is formed from the degradation of very low density lipoprotein. It contain a range of triglycerides &cholestrol esters. It carries fat and cholesterol to the body's cells.

In this classification of lipoprotein LDL is dangerous and it will increase the chance of getting heart disease and stroke. Because LDL making most of your body cholesterol.

10)Two types of cholesterol transport proteins, low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL), bind to cholesterol and carry it through the bloodstream. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is characterized by high cholesterol levels in the blood, which can lead to cardiovascular disease. FH is associated with a loss-of-function mutation of a gene that encodes LDL receptors in liver cells. Individuals who are heterozygous produce lower-than-normal amounts of the LDL receptors, and individuals who are homozygous for the mutant allele have no LDL...
