Topic chosen |
The Photoelectric Effect |
(2) |
Definition |
Photoelectric effect is defined as the phenomena in which electrons are emitted from a metal surface when light or electromagnetic radiation is allowed to fall on the surface of metal. |
(3) |
Mathematical representation |
When an electron is ejected from the metal surface due to photoelectric effect, it gains kinetic energy, K. Maximum value of this kinetic energy is given by following expression: Kmax = hf – Φ Where, h = planck’s constant f = frequency of the incident photon of light Φ = work function of metal surface |
(4) |
Explanation of the mathematical expression |
(a)The incident photon of light, which falls on metal surface has energy hf. (b)Φ is the work function, which means it acts as threshold of energy which incident light or photon has to overcome. (c)Once incident energy hf is greater than Φ, the electron is emitted from metal surface with some kinetic energy. |
