Option 1:
Anabolic steroids, despite not being addictive, were placed into
Schedule III by the DEA. Research how this drug effects the nervous
system.
OR
Option 2:
Neuropathy affects a large number of people, especially diabetics. Research a drug treatment for neuropathy and give its proposed mechanism of action, purported efficacy, and any risks with its use.
OR
Option 3:
Medications shortages have plagued the pharmaceutical industry in the past decade. Visit the website http://www.bing.com/search?q=http%2F%2Fwww.fda.gov%2Fdrugs%2Fdrugsafety%2Fdrugshortages
2Fucm050792.htm&form=IE10TR&src=IE10TR&pc=CPNTDFJS and report on TWO different medications and the reason they are in short supply.
Option 1 :
Anabolic steroids work differently from other drugs of abuse; they do not have the same short-term effects on the brain. The most important difference is that steroids do not trigger rapid increases in the brain chemical dopamine, which causes the "high" that drives people to abuse other substances. However, long-term steroid abuse can act on some of the same brain pathways and chemicals—including dopamine, serotonin, and opioid systems—that are affected by other drugs. This may result in a significant effect on mood and behavior.
Option 2 :
Peripheral neuropathy, which is often simply referred to as "neuropathy," is a condition that occurs when your peripheral nerves become damaged or disrupted.
It is estimated that neuropathy affects about 2.4 percent of the general population, and about 8 percent of people older than age 55.
However, this estimate doesn't include people affected by a neuropathy resulting from physical trauma to the nerves.
Medication options for pain control include antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and capsaicin cream.About 10% of people who use capsaicin cream have a large benefit.
A systematic review concluded that "tricyclic antidepressants and traditional anticonvulsants are better for short term pain relief than newer generation anticonvulsants.
The mechanisms of diabetic neuropathy are poorly understood. At present, treatment alleviates pain and can control some associated symptoms, but the process is generally progressive.
As a complication, there is an increased risk of injury to the feet because of loss of sensation (see diabetic foot). Small infectionscan progress to ulceration and this may require amputation.
