Expert Solution

Immigration refers to the movement of people into a destination based country of which they are not the citizens. There are mainly three kinds of immigration, such as,

  • employment- based, which is more relevant today
  • family- based immigration
  • humanitarian - based immigration

According to George W Bush, Immigration Reform, is a term used to denote proposals that help in increasing the number of legal immigration and reduce their number in case of illegal immigrants in U.S. One of the major immigration reform came in 1986, which made it illegal of hiring illegal immigrants.

The U.S immigration reforms has undergone drastic changes in the past few years under the administration of Donald Trump. This is a cause of concern because, as per 2015 data, about 60 per cent of U.S's newest legal permanent residents were admitted because of family ties. Also, 66 per cent of legal immigrants comes America by random chance, just because their family member or relative is in U.S. However, only 12 per cent of legal immigrants are admitted on the basis of merit or skill. Because of the stated reasons, U.S is currently trying to make strict immigration reforms.

Thus, given the complex nature of immigration in the U.S, any immigration reform plan must include increased border security, clear path to citizenship for immigrant workers, a streamlined and clearer application process, and accountability for employers who break the law.

Apart from these, some other immigration reforms ideas could be like recruiting or welcoming immigrants based on skills rather than family- ties. Other suggestions like,

  • recruiting health care professionals to improve the rural health care,
  • allowing private sponsors or charity institutions to deal better with refugees, with the support of the government,
  • more of visa exchange programs would also help in this regard.
