What are the factors that influence perception? Do we all perceive in the same way? How do optical or perceptual illusions affect the relation between what we perceive and reality?

Solutions

Expert Solution

There are mainly two things that influence perception namely external and internal factors. External factors are one which is present in the surroundings. They are frequency, status, size, intensity and so on. For instance, a large house will be perceived first than a small cycle which is beside it. In addition, things which have strong smell will be first perceived first than others. Internal factors refer to personality, attitude, need, temperament and so on. A person with a secure personality will perceive people to be warm and kind. Also, if a person has a cold attitude towards the female, then he is less likely to recruit a female candidate. Perception differs from person to person. Each individual has unique characteristics and situations they face. Accordingly, their perception also differs.

The word illusion itself describe distortion. Therefore, optical or perceptual illusions affect the relationship between what we perceive and what the actual reality is. Here, the brain makes an error in giving the right image to the person. Therefore the individual experience illusion. The properties of the visual area in the brain get disrupted showing the distorted image.
