Make an order-of-magnitude approximation for the volume of gasoline consumed by automobiles each day in the United States by estimating the number of vehicles driven each day, the average distance traveled, and a typical fuel economy rating.
There are about 270 million people in the United States, and so we estimate the number of cars in the country as 100 million (guessing that there are between two or three people per car). We also estimate that the average distance travelled by per day is 40 mi. If we estimate a fuel economy of 0.05 gal/mi then each car uses 2 gal of gasoline each day.
Hence calculating the amount of gasoline used is
Amount of gasoline used = 100 × 106 × 2
= 200 × 106 gal
Therefore we estimate the gasoline consumption between 200 × 105 – 200 × 107 gallons per day.
Therefore we estimate the gasoline consumption between 200 × 105 – 200 × 107 gallons per day.
