Scenario: You are working as a personal trainer and your 21-year-old client, Alex, tells you on the first day that he has epilepsy and has known this since he was 12-years-old. Their physician has prescribed him medication and has also cleared him to participate in all physical activity at the gym.
Questions:
1) What further information would be useful to know about Alex's seizure history, types of seizures, and the postical phase? Refer to Ch. 1's teaching regarding taking a medical history, if needed.
2) What education might you provide the other staff members at the gym so they know how to help? Explain/justify your reasoning.
3) What is your seizure management plan, should Alex have a
seizure while you are training him? What other individuals need to
be informed of this plan?
1 - The further information would be very helpful for the trainer at the gym -
a - if he tired too soon?
b - Which phases of seizure does he have -
(I) - Prodrome and Aura
(ii) - ictal
(iii) - End-stage.
c- Do you lose your consciousness during any physical activity.
d - Any trembling movement does he have of arms and legs.
2 - The education that I might provide the other staff members at the gym so they know how to help -
a - Lie down the person on the person with ease
b - Put any cloth or something below his head that will give him a bit of relief.
c - Stay with the person and speaks calmly until the seizure ends.
d - If possible take the person to the home and make sure that the rest properly.
3 - Seizure management plan -
1 - Give the medicines on time to the patient.
2 - Take proper sleep and also drink a lot of water
3 - Have a balanced diet and avoid alcohol and smoking.
The other people should have informed about the management plan and what to do during a seizure as mentioned above.
