Long-term care refers to a comprehensive set of medical, personal and social services coordinated to meet the physical, social and emotional needs of people with chronic illnesses or disabilities. A nursing home may be the best option for people who need 24-hour medical care and supervision.

Nursing homes provide the most comprehensive care a person can get outside of a hospital. Nursing homes provide assistance with maternal care - such as bathing, dressing and feeding - as well as skilled care. Qualified nursing care is provided by a registered nurse and includes medical observation and treatment.

Skilled care also includes services provided by specially trained professionals, such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and respiratory therapists.
The services provided by nursing homes vary from facility to facility. Services often include:

• Board and part
• Monitor medications
• Personal care (including dressing, bathing and helping to use the toilet)
• 24 hour emergency care
• Social and recreational activities
