The general criteria used by the marketers to segment a consumer market is based on 4 different ways used by them:

1. Demographic: The market could be either divided by the demographic factors of the population like the age segmentation, gender segmentation, income segmentation etc.

2. Geographic: The market could also be divided by the location specific where certain location would be getting a different product as according to other certain places. Division by the terms of places.

3. Behavioural: The market could be divided by the behaviour shown by the people like some prefer a sporty lifestyle, some prefer casual etc. One can divide on the behaviour of the people or the lifestyle.

4. Psychographic: At last, the market could also be divided by the psychological benefit or value they would seem to recreate by your product like the self esteem or high status value associated with high brands like Apple etc.
