Pricilla Longfellow, a 30-year-old woman, comes into Dr. Fran Practon's office with her mother. She is having an ingrown toenail looked at today to see if surgery is needed. She has experienced traumatic brain injury from an automobile accident that occurred when she was 18 years old. She has difficulty speaking and has a level of understanding somewhere between that of a 5- and a 7-year-old. You will be greeting her at the reception desk and collecting a copayment. The patient is emphatic about wanting to see the physician herself and tells her mother, “I can do it by myself, I don't need you.” Role-play the communication between the administrative medical assistant, the patient, and her mother.

Directions: Write the complete dialog between the administrative medical assistant, the patient, and her mother. in complete descriptive sentences in paragraph form using the concepts below. Factors to include in your scenario:

1. Greet the patient warmly; address the patient by name.

2. Act professionally and keep the conversation focused.

3. Speak slowly and in a calm manner.

4. Select simple words and short phrases.

5. Use verbal and nonverbal cues.

6. Use tone of voice to express concern; do not raise your voice.

7. Repeat and rephrase the message as necessary.
