Mrs. Gretna, a 50-year-old legally blind patient, comes into the office to have her back checked. She is complaining of lumbar pain. The physician has asked you to escort Mrs. Gretna to his office where he would like to obtain information before the clinical medical assistant escorts her into an examination room. Role-play the communication between the administrative medical assistant and the patient.

Directions: Write the complete dialog between the patient (the elderly female) and the administrative medical assistant in complete descriptive sentences in paragraph form using the concepts below. Factors to include in your scenario:

1. Approach the patient cheerfully and identify yourself by name.

2. Look directly at the patient, greet her by name and speak clearly in a normal tone and speed.

3. Inform the patient of others who are in the same room or area.

4. Let the patient know exactly what you will be doing.

5. Ask the patient if you could take her hand to show her the surroundings.

6. Escort the patient to the physician's office, look for obstacles along the way, and provide verbal cues.

7. Inform the patient of the location and tell her when you leave the room; knock before reentering, even if the door was left open.

8. Explain the sounds of unusual noises and office machines.
