In biology why is it important to know about the polarity of a covalent bond

Solutions

Expert Solution

In polar covalent bonds, the electrons are shared unequally, as one atom exerts a stronger force of attraction on the electrons than the other. In other words, one atom is more electronegative than the other. The importance of polar covalent bond lies in the fact that these kinds of bonds allow the formation of another kind of weak bond called a hydrogen bond. Secondly, the polarity of covalent bond determines how molecules interact. For example, a water molecule contains polar covalent bond and this polarity helps them to dissolve in water owing to their hydrogen bonds.
