A patient presents a prescription for Coumadin (warfarin) 2½ mg po qd.
How many 5 mg warfarin tablets should the patient receive for a month’s supply?
If the patient’s dose was increased to Coumadin 5 mg daily after 2 weeks of medication, how long would the total prescription last?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The prescription shows that the client should take Tab. Coumadin (2.5mg) per orally every day.

1--- For a month's supply the ( 5mg) tablets needed are:-

The available dose of Coumadin tablets is 5mg.

The dose required for a day is 2.5mg.

So one 5mg tablet can be used for 2 days. (2.5 mg each day )

The number of tablets needed for 1 month is

30/2 =15 tablets (5 mg ).

15 (5mg) tablets is needed for a month for the prescribed dose.

2.---- If the dose changed to 5mg daily after 2 weeks. The tablet needed are:-

Only 2.5 mg is needed for the first 2 weeks.

So for the first 14 days the 5mg tablets needed are:-

14/2 =7 (5mg) tablets.

After 14 days daily 5mg tablet is required.

Between 14 to 30 days 16 days are there.

So 16 (5mg) tablets are needed.

For a month 16+7=23 (5mg tablets ).

23 tablets are needed for a month.

According to the prescription only 15 tablets is needed for a month .

According to the changed dose 23 tablets are needed .

The total prescription lasts for 22 days only.

The total prescription does not lasts for 1month.
