Retail medical clinics are an example of a disruptive business model that is shaking up the hospital model and traditional doctor’s offices.
Disruptive innovation has brought affordability and convenience to customers in a variety of industries. However, health care remains expensive and inaccessible to many because of the lack of business model innovation. The theory of disruptive innovation helps explain how complicated, expensive products and services are eventually converted into simpler, affordable ones. There are two different trajectories of performance improvement in every market.
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic has taken on a global pandemic trend, posing a serious challenge to the global health care system. During the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, the government enacted comprehensive and stringent preventive and control measures to bring the outbreak under control as soon as possible. The health informatics community, including clinical informatics, public health informatics, consumer health informatics and clinical research informatics has taken action to leverage health information technology for epidemic monitoring, detection, early warning, prevention and control.
Further, the Internet of Things has provided platform such as world meter that helps people to access data to monitor COVID-19 epidemic. The health information technology has played a vital role in the battle against COVID-19.
Presently, COVID-19 pandemic has expanded worldwide, the task of epidemic prevention and control has become more arduous and the world is facing immense challenges. In order to provide theoretical as well as practical references to other countries on how health information technology can be used to respond COVID-19 pandemic as well as to various public health emergencies and disasters, a technical framework responding to the COID-19 pandemic from a health informatics perspective was developed.
