1. Personal nutrition is influenced by several factors like personal food preferences, effect of food advertisings on television, genetic and environmental factors.
Food is essential for life and it is treated as relief of the hunger or satisfying the appetite. But a balanced diet includes 6 essential nutrients in the food required for the maintenance of the good health and support the recovery from any illness. The essential nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water.
Good nutrition results in well developed body or an ideal weight for height and body composition of ratio of muscle mass to fat mass that reflects the good muscle development. The skin of healthy individual appears smooth and clear, the hair is glossy and eyes appear clear and bright. In the healthy individuals the appetite, process of digestion and elimination are normal.
People with well nourishment are alert physically and mentally with a positive outlook on life. Healthy individuals are resistant to infections when compared with under nourished individuals. The good nutrition and balanced diet focuses to growth and increasing life expectancy of population. A balanced nutrition helps to health promotion and this is accomplished by My plate.
The My Plate system includes a balanced diet providing calories with abundance of food such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat free milks and other dairy products. These foods provide all minerals and vitamins along with abundant fiber. Thus, the My Plate system contributes to DRIs of Americans such that the individuals obtain sufficient calories by adequate intake of nutrients.
Community nutrition includes provision of balanced diets to various groups of populations incuding undernourished children and adults, low income groups and diabled children and elderly.
supply food through USDA (US Department of Agriculture) to target populations including low income group individuals, breast feeding mothers, infants and children. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is called food stamp program expanded during 1960s and 1970s. This program helps the poor and needy to purchase the required food.
With this program, the needy are provided electronic benefits transfer cards to be used as debit cards at approved retail stores purchasing the household food needs every month. School meals program assist the low income group children to obtain healthy food at school. National school lunch is provided by United States with fresh fruits and vegetables, breakfast and milk at school.
Subprograms under this program provide nutritionally balanced meals and snacks to school children of low income group after school and also during summer. The meals provided include recommended dietary allowances of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium and required calories according to the dietary guidelines for Americans (2010).
