A router for which all directly connected networks belong to the same area is an internal router.These routers generally run a single copy of the basic routing algorithm.

A router that attaches to multiple areas is known as a border router. These border routers run multiple copies of the basic algorithm. Exactly one copy is run for each attached area and an additional copy is run for the backbone.
