what charge does a soil particle have and what does that mean in terms of its ability to hold cations or anions? How can you increase CEC (cation exchange capacity)?
A soil particle generally have a negative charge. This negative charge allows soil particles to attract and hold positively charged (+ charge) positively charged nutrients and non- nutrients.
Cation exchange capacity refers to the number of cations that can be retained on the surface of a soil particle. The negative charge on the surface of soil particles , in addition to Binding positively charged particles also allow them to exchange with other positively charged particles in the surrounding water.
✓ Though the CEC varies from one type of soil to another , the CEC is an inherent capacity of a soil particle & is very difficult to alter this tendency.
