Explain at least two motivational theories that will need to be changed for Generation Alpha. ( Explain, criticize and provide possible modifications to the theories)
Generation Alpha
Generation Alpha is a term used to denote the children born between the years 2010 and 2025. They are also denoted as the iGeneration. This is the first generation born completely in the 21st century compared to other generations such as Generation Z, Generation Y, etc.
Motivational theories and Generation Alpha
The following motivational theories need to be modified for Generation Alpha.
1.Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory
Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory describes the hierarchical order of factors of motivation. It says that a person will experience motivation in the order such as Physiological Needs, Safety Needs, Social Needs, Esteem Needs, and Self-Actualisation Needs. This theory is not suitable for Generation Alpha because this theory says that human life will completely be motivated with the achievement of the highest needs only that is Self-Actualisation Needs. Which is least applicable to this generation as they may get completely satisfied in between the factors. Also, the definite hierarchical order proposed by Maslow is also not suitable for Generation Alpha. Maslow assumes that the human being will go for only one need at a time is also not applicable to them. In order to make it suitable to Generation Alpha, we must take the definitive order of the motivation factor from it. Also, we have to admit that people may strive for more than one need at a time.
2.Mc. Gregor’s Theory X and Theory Y
Mc. Gregor’s Theory X and Theory Y are based on certain assumptions which are named as Theory X and Theory Y. Theory ‘X’ represents a set of the traditional view of human behavior which are assumptions that describe some negative aspects of human behavior like an average individual does not like work etc. At the same time, the assumptions of theory Y describe some positive aspects of human behavior such as an average individual like work, etc. This theory is not suitable for Generation Alpha as this type of generalization will not be practical. Both theories are focused mainly on the management style, which is not practical in organizations where Generation Alpha employees are working. Applying different theories for different individuals is also not practical in the time of Generation Alpha. This theory can be modified by describing only concrete ideas rather than mere assumptions.
