This is a question about Gamma Gamma correlation lab.
What is the difference between a true and a chance coincidence?
what is the minimum radiation dose in mrem which causes rapid human death?
thanx in advance
The strength of radioactive sources can be measured by different techniques. One of this is time coincidence technique. This method is based on measuring two events occurring in short interval f time. If the pulses produced by two gamma rays emitted from same radioactive nucleus (eg C060) reach the coincidence unit during resolving time an output pulse is registered and true coincidence is then sais to have occurred. Apart from such true coincidence there will be random coincidence occurring due to pulses which are accidentally in coincidence these are called chance coincidence. The effect of such chance coincidences is to be omitted since the source strength is obtained from knowledge of true coincidence only.
If 100 people get a 350 x 103 mrem sudden dose of radiation then half of them die in 60 days this dose is considered LD 50/60 ie 50% death rate in 60 days. For 10,00,000 mrem dose however a person will be dead in an hour.
