Maria is 29 years old, five foot seven, and reports a pre-pregnancy weight of 140 pounds (BMI =22). She is in her first trimester of pregnancy at 11 weeks and is in good health. If Maria were your friend, you would recommend she discuss these questions with a healthcare provider. However, as a way to review key concepts in this chapter, can you answer Maria’s questions?
1. How much weight am I supposed to gain throughout my pregnancy? Is it okay that I’ve gained only two pounds so far? How many additional Calories will I need in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters?
2. How much additional protein do I need during my pregnancy? I take a multivitamin pill daily that contains 400 mcg of Folic Acid. Do I need extra amounts of folic acid while I’m pregnant? If so, how much more? Why is getting adequate folate during pregnancy so important?
f. (3 pts) Do I need to take an iron supplement? Why, or why not? If so, how much?
g. (2 pts) I usually go for a 30-minute walk with my husband after dinner. Is it okay to keep walking throughout my pregnancy? Are there any exercises that I should avoid while pregnant?
1. Pregnant women.
I would recommend her to eat more because she should grow 15 to 25 pounds more.
* She needs 1800 calories per day in 1st trimester.
* She needs additional 400 calories in per day 2nd trimester that means she needs 2200 calories.
* Mary need additional 200 calories per day than 2nd trimester in 3rd trimester that means 2400 calories.
2.
Every adult need this 0.75grams but pregnant women additionally required to take 6 grams.
No additional amount of folic acid should be taken,400mcg is enough for pregnant women.
Folate is very important during pregnancy time because this helps in greatly decreasing the serious neutral tube defects.
F) The pregnant women needs iron approximately 1000 mg. In the iron of 1000 mg
* Fetus and placenta requires 350 mg.
* 250 mg is lost in blood at delivery.
* 450 mg is required for increasing maternal red blood cells mass.
G)
Pregnant women should walk 150 minutes in a week. That means she have to walk approximately 21 minutes per day, that indicates she is walking more than needed.
She should avoid some exercises which shows efforts on abdominal, exercises in heat, aerobics, etc. but she have to make some exercises like swimming, walking, running, indoor cycling, etc.
