Biodiversity can be classified heirachialy as follows for all organisms: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.

Kingdom: There are five kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. Viruses are not part of this as they are considered non living. Classification is based on nutrition, and type and number of cells. Kingdom will have largest number of organism. Plantae consists of algae and all plants while animalia includes all animals.

Phylum: All organism that belong to the same phylum have similar physical similarities within a kingdom. These organisms will mostly have the same ancestor.

Class: Class includes all organism of a phylum that have similar characteristics.

Order: Order is a group of animals from a single class that have similar characteristics.

Family: Family is a group of organism from an order that similar characteristics. Humans are from Homindae family.

Genus: genus is a group of species that have the same characteristics. Each organism has a genus name and a species name. Genus name is the first part of the name.

Species is the lowest and most strict level of classification. Organism belonging to same species should be able to breed with each other. Species is the second part of the name. Species have the least number of organisms.
