You are working at a local hospital working a medical social work case manager with your newest client on discharge planning. Your hospital allows you to work with clients to provide case management services and support for up to 60 days following their discharge from the hospital. You have been assigned to work with your latest client, Larry. Larry is a 35 year old single father of 3 children, ages 5, 6, 14. He was admitted to the hospital 19 days ago with moderate respiratory distress and a positive diagnosis of Corona C19. All 3 of Larry’s children were tested for Corona C19 and all 3 tested negative. Larry’s children have been placed temporarily in the care of a local foster family as Larry has no relatives able and willing to care for the children, but are expected to return home with him within a week of discharge from the hospital. Larry has made significant progress in his recovery, however, will be unable to return to work at the warehouse where he was employed due to limitations in his physical abilities related to ongoing problems with his breathing, physical strength, and stamina. It is unknown when/if he will be able to return to his employment, depending on his long term health prognosis.
1. What are the major concerns present with Larry? What would you identify as the most pressing concern? Develop a minimum of 3 intervention strategies based upon this scenario that you might employ in your work with him.
2. In regard to Larry’s children, in what ways might you be able to provide services to support them moving forward? What services will be needed for Larry’s family even following your involvement with the case past the next 90 days.
